CATHY'S CORNER: Holding on Tight, Then Letting Go

June 26, 2015

“Some people believe holding on and hanging in there are signs of great strength. However, there are times when it takes much more strength to know when to let go and then do it.” Ann Landers

It’s only week 1 of summer and I’m already sunburned, bug bitten, driving around like an Uber, and exhausted from keeping the kids entertained, especially my little guy who’s on crutches. He’s been by my side most of the time as I’ve become his butler. On the other hand, my older son has been hanging out with friends and will soon be away at camp, hopefully meeting new friends and gaining some independence and maturity.

While I wish I could always keep my big guy close to me, it’s time he figures out certain things on his own. My heart is torn about this, but I guess that’s the great paradox of motherhood: holding on tight and staying connected while gently letting go and giving freedom to explore.

As always, I welcome your feedback so please email me at catherines@macaronikid.com or submit a comment below. Did I miss something? Please let me know! Have a great week ahead. Coming next week: July 4th parades, fireworks and more!

Unplug and head outside. That is the idea behind National Wildlife Federation's widely popular national family event, Great American Backyard Campout. In conjunction with Great Outdoors Month, the annual event encourages people of all ages to camp in their backyards, neighborhoods, parks and campgrounds, as a way to reconnect with nature. This year's Great American Backyard Campout is Saturday, June 27. National Wildlife Federation provides everything you need to head out into the great outdoors. The Campout website has packing lists, recipes, nocturnal wildlife guides, exploration activities, nature games and more. Check out the campout taking place at the New Canaan Nature Center.
