Macaroni Cares: Camp for Grieving Children Opens in NY

Experience Camps offer hope and healing for boys

March 27, 2015

Kennybrook Experience, the newest addition to Experience Camps, is currently enrolling boys, ages 9-12, who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling or other meaningful person in their lives. Kennybrook Experience will be held at Camp Kennybrook in Monticello, NY, from August 17-22. The camp is free to all who attend.

Experience Camps help build confidence, encourage laughter, and navigate grief through friendship, teamwork, activities, and the common bond of loss. Besides the Kennybrook Experience, they offer programs in Maine and California, and will serve over 250 children across the country this summer. Activities include everything from soccer and tennis to archery and rock climbing. Campers are supervised by enthusiastic and compassionate adults, along with licensed clinicians who facilitate the daily bereavement activities.

Campers take part in a traditional summer camp experience, with opportunities throughout the week to share their stories, remember their loved ones and find comfort in their group of peers. The best part is being able to laugh and cry with other kids who “get it”.

Caregivers and referring agencies can visit www.experience.camp for more information and an online application to enroll for this summer. If you know someone who might need this information, please share this with them!

“Although the boys have lost their dad, they have gained a new family to help them travel down this path.” – Mom of 3 campers
