CATHY'S CORNER: Can You Have It All?

October 16, 2014

“We hold ourselves back in ways big and small, by lacking self-confidence, by not raising our hands, and by pulling back when we should be leaning in.”
Sheryl Sandberg (COO Facebook),

As a full-time mom who works part-time, I find it intimidating when someone says, “You can have it all.” While balancing life, motherhood and work pursuits, I often kick myself for not living up to all the things I should be doing, need to get done, think I must do better, or want to do. On one hand, it’s important to remember to compromise, delegate tasks, have date nights, lean on friends and family, and stay organized. On the other hand, mundane things like kids with sniffles, moody tweens, housework, snow days and school activities can throw everything out of order and make having it all far easier said then done.

For example: it’s Thursday night…I’m trying to publish this newsletter but the kids keep fighting and won't listen, homework needs to get done, the kitchen is a mess, and my car needed an oil change two weeks ago. Like anything else, I guess the idea of balance lies in letting a few (ok...many) things slide, asking for help, and trying to focus on what matters. So I’m ordering takeout, and will deal with the car, the bills and the mess and laundry tomorrow.

Inspired by her commitment to children and families, I profiled local mom and State Representative Kim Fawcett who is running for Senate and shows us how she juggles politics and parenthood. So as the adage goes, can you have it all? My answer is yes, but just not all at the same time.

To all of you out there trying to juggle kids, work and everything else, I welcome your thoughts and ideas. Have a great week ahead.
