CATHY'S CORNER: Odd Couple

August 28, 2014

"What is imposed, sooner or later breaks out and sets itself free - whether it's hair, head or heart. Respect your nature and the nature of others." - author unknown

I can't believe my two boys can be so different and yet come from the same parents. It's like they came from two opposing planets. My younger son is clearly from the Organized Planet - where towels and underwear are nicely picked up and thrown in the hamper, toys and books are tucked away in drawers and on shelves, library books are always returned on their due date, and dinner is always eaten at the same time each and every night.

My older son, on the other hand, is from an entirely different planet, far far away. On this planet, people often forget to brush their teeth, hand in their homework, pee before a long car ride, or turn off their cell phones. These easy-going but strange beings also tend to lose socks and keys, leave lights on and corn chips on the floor, and can eat dinner at any time.

As the first week of school ends in our house, my kids' different learning styles become more apparent as well. I try to embrace their uniqueness, but feel myself begging my big guy to stay on task, and pleading with my little guy to take it easy more. Sometimes I wonder why they're brothers. Maybe to learn from each other's strengths and weaknesses? Or perhaps it's for me to realize we're all wired a little differently, and to just let it be.

Enjoy the long weekend and have a great week ahead. From ways to improve your morning routine to giveaways and fun events, I have tons of great Back to School (and Back to Work) ideas for you.
