CATHY'S CORNER: Letting Go

July 25, 2014

We have to be able to grow up. Our wrinkles are our medals of the passage of life. They are what we have been through and who we want to be. Lauren Hutton

To say that being a parent is about letting go of control is an understatement sometimes. My 11 year old son won’t get off his iPhone no matter how many times I ask. My 7 year old is crying because he dropped his popsicle all over the floor. It’s a sweltering summer night and I finally got to take a shower by 10 pm. My flip flops broke. The house is a sandy, sticky mess. And when I look in the mirror, I suddenly realize how gray my hair is. As I turn another year older this week, I ask myself, “How did I get so old?”

Gone are the days when I spent hours at the salon or worried about my nails. Now, I can barely get to the gym or fold the laundry. With kids, gone are the days when everything had to be perfect. Maybe that’s a good thing, because now I have to focus on things that really matter. Like wiping away my little guy’s tears, and paying closer attention to my older son who’s growing up so fast.

Have a great week ahead.

Cathy
