Cathy’s Corner: Fishing

Why Is Doing Nothing So Difficult?

June 6, 2013
"Whatever we are waiting for - peace of mind, contentment, grace, the inner awareness of simple abundance - it will surely come to us, but only when we are ready to receive it with an open and grateful heart." Sarah Ban Breathnach

"Time you enjoy wasting is never wasted time." Bertrand Russell

It finally feels like summer is here, and the beach awaits. My husband and boys went fishing last weekend and caught nothing but fresh air and ended up having a great time. At first, my older son, Haydn (pictured) didn’t want to go because he said waiting for fish was boring. “What’s the point of waiting all day for something that might not even happen?” he grumbled as we packed the car. As someone who sleeps next to her iPhone and constantly feels the need to always be “doing something,” I understand his rant and how hard it can be to turn off the computer and tv. What’s worse, it’s even harder to turn off my mind. But with all their constant use of iPods, iPads and other electronic gadgets, I want my boys to learn to enjoy being present with quiet time outside, staring out a window or simply looking at the stars. Who would’ve thought that the art of doing nothing would require so much effort?

But with the weather cooperating most of next week, hopefully it’ll be easy to get outside. Plus Saturday June 8 is National Get Outdoors Day, so I hope you spend time outside together and enjoy a farmers market, picnic at the park, a water balloon toss in the yard, a walk by the water, or just hanging out with the dogs. Please let me know what you do. Time you enjoy wasting is never wasted time.
