Gratitude and Inspiration

May 24, 2012
Memorial Day is not only the unofficial start of summer. It's a day where we honor those who have served our country. It's also a day to honor our communities and appreciate those who have inspired us and made our lives better. That said, I wanted to tell you this week about a kind and generous woman and mother who was discouraged by her son's school lunch program, and set about transforming the lives of other kids. I hope her story inspires you, and I will be writing more about her organization in the weeks ahead.

The Ground Up Campaign, started by Founder/CEO of Birds Nest Foundation and documentary film producer Avis Richards, is dedicated to planting hundreds of indoor academic gardens in schools across the country. The goal is to help kids understand and appreciate healthy foods, and teach healthy eating habits. The first 100 gardens are currently being planted in New York City schools and is part of Mayor Bloomberg's "grow to learn" initiative. The campaign was inspired by her documentary film Lunch, which takes on the unhealthy lunch programs in schools, earning Avis several high profile awards. The film them inspired her to create the 3-time Emmy nominated TV series in New York called Lunch NYC, a lifestyle program helping people find sustainable healthy living ideas. For more information about this incredible film, visit http://lunchtheflim.com/lunch/index.php. Her Birds Nest Foundation is a non-profit creative group that produces documentaries, short videos and public service announcements for charitable organizations. Her productions touch upon important topics such as nutrition, education, women's issues, anti-violence, and more. Please let me know your thoughts.

Hope you enjoy reading this week's edition, and please let me know if you have a charity or special issue you'd like to share. Again, watch for coupons, giveways and other goodies in upcoming newsletters. Have a great week.
