Benefits of an Early Orthodontic Appointment

Dental Health

By Dr. Emily Gabeler, DDS at Kids First Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics August 18, 2016

The American Association of Orthodontist recommends that the first orthodontic screening should occur no later than 7 years of age or at the sign of orthodontic problems. This age coincides when the first permanent molars come into the mouth. These molars determine the front-to-back and the side-to-side tooth relationships. Screening at a young age allows the orthodontist to identify when the most advantageous time to begin treatment is. Treatment may not be indicated early, but the pattern of dental eruption can be seen, and the parent can be alerted to any developmental changes that might occur. Early screening also allows the child’s first experience with the orthodontist to be a positive one.

Some of the early warning signs that may indicate an orthodontic examination are: Early or late loss of teeth, difficulty in chewing or biting, mouth breathing, finger sucking or other oral habits, crowding, misplaced or blocked out teeth, jaws that shift or make sounds, front teeth that stick out, or any facial imbalance.

Early orthodontic treatment in some cases can lead to simpler and more effective treatment time for patients.
