This week, as my oldest son went off to sleepaway camp, I remember my own experience at sleep away camp. I remember being homesick at first, hearing the crickets chirp in the hot air as I lay awake in my sleeping bag. I remember my counselor named Munchkin who had red frizzy hair and a huge smile. I remember jumping into a cold blue lake as my toes sank into the mud. And I remember enjoying Color War, that silly competition that taught me that life is not about winning or losing.
In spite of the goofy antics that included wearing underwear on our heads as we tossed water balloons, I also learned that being good at just one thing isn’t enough. So while I could rally a tennis ball and do cartwheels, my teammates helped bring us to victory with their crazy yodeling, tug of war and mad paddling skills. It wasn’t about actual winning, but in the end, everyone came out a winner and ate popsicles.
