Is a Remodel in your Future?

By Patrick Lyons April 29, 2016

Considering a remodel, renovation or addition this year?  The time to start planning is now.  Whether you are updating aesthetics, function or outdated technology, there are several critical steps to keep in mind before you begin.

Once you decide on the type of home improvement you are interested in making, a design is often necessary.  Keep in mind that choosing a designer is more than picking from a list of architects and design-build firms online.  It is imperative to meet them in person, discussing both your vision and budget goals for your project.

Budget is increasingly important so your design is tailored to the amount of money you are willing to invest.  Many fail to clearly communicate budget and are left with a design that is not in line with their investment amount.  The process of choosing the right designer could take several weeks and the process of creating the design, floor plans, construction drawings and project specifications can take anywhere from several weeks to months depending on the company you work with.

Upon completion of the initial design phase, interviewing contractors to complete your project should begin.  Your designer may have recommendations for you on who they work well with, but it is important to evaluate more than one contractor to meet your needs.  Request proof of license and required insurances to make sure you and your home are protected.  From initial meetings with the contractor, to the preparation of your estimate, you should expect another 2-6 week timeframe.

After selecting the right team to complete your remodel, plans are submitted to the proper departments for the permit process. Planning and Zoning, Environmental Protection, Wetlands and the Building Department are all steps in obtaining a permit and can take days to several months depending on the complexity of your remodel.

With permits in hand, construction can finally begin.  To minimize delays in the construction process, it is helpful to make all required product selections and layout decisions as soon as possible.  Lead times for products vary and the sooner your input is received, the sooner the order can be placed.  Last minute product choices can easily set a contractor backs weeks, one step is dependent on the other.

Taking into consideration the process for a remodel, you can see why it is a good idea to think about planning for it now.  The earlier you start the planning process, the more options you will have for completing your project.
